Carnival Cruise Lines says that its ship “Carnival Fascination” re-entered service at its home port in Jacksonville, Fla., yesterday, after completing a $34 million drydock session. Upgrades include a new WaterWorks aqua park (including a 300-foot water slide), an adults-only Serenity retreat area, newly added balconies for 98 cabins, and a renovated Lido Deck pool area. The ship will operate four- and five-day Caribbean cruises from the port.. |

Travel Industry Pledges Haiti Relief Support
As rescue and relief efforts get underway in Haiti following this week’s devastating earthquake, many travel suppliers are organizing their own aid programs. Royal Caribbean and its sister lines Azamara Club Cruises and Celebrity Cruises will transport relief supplies – including rice, dried beans, canned goods, and other foodstuffs – aboard their ships calling at Labadee, RCI’s private destination in Haiti (about 100 miles from Port-au-Prince, the nation’s capital). Also, Norwegian Cruise Line will match Red Cross contributions from passengers and crew members dollar for dollar and deliver donated supplies to Haiti as well, and Disney will donate $100,000 to the Red Cross. Other cruise lines are reportedly investigating similar initiatives.
Several U.S. airlines, including American and Continental, have flown relief flights to Port-au-Prince, and many are now allowing passengers to donate frequent flyer miles to help transport aid workers to the island.
Imad Khalidi, the CEO of Auto Europe, announced that his company will pledge $5 for each booking made by an agent through June 30 toward a Haiti relief fund – and, he will personally match the pledge.
Meanwhile, U.S. regulators have suspended all civilian flights to Haiti from U.S. gateways to make room at the airport in Port-au-Prince for relief flights. |
